DIVISION COMMANDER

The Corrections Division is responsible for the fair and firm care, custody, and control of all sentenced and non-sentenced inmates charged to the custody of the Sheriff. The Buchanan County Jail is designed with two separate housing units with a bed capacity for 224 inmates. The Buchanan County Jail provides a complete range of services for all inmates while they are incarcerated.

A forty person staff has been allocated to provide supervision of inmates incarcerated in the Buchanan County Jail. The Corrections Division consists of; a Divisional Commander – Correctional Administrator, eight sergeants, twenty deputies, eight civilian detention officers, and three licensed practical nurses.

The jail staff is responsible for all transportation of inmates, as well as, the extradition of any wanted person from anywhere in the continental United States.

VISITATION BY GENERAL PUBLIC
  • Inmates can receive non-contact visits by the general public every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on holidays that fall on a Saturday.
  • Individuals from the general public who desire to visit an inmate during the Saturday visitation times must schedule a visitation appointment no later than 3:00 p.m. on the Friday immediately proceeding the Saturday the individual desires to visit. Appointments can be made in person with the receptionist in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center or by calling (816) 236-8888.
  • Visitation appointments will be on a first come - first serve basis.
  • Individuals who visit inmates must be at least 17 years old with an accepted current identification card with a photograph.
  • Individuals will be allowed only one 20 minute visit per Saturday visitation day.
  • Individuals who are currently on probation or parole will not be allowed to visit inmates.
  • All individuals are subject to checks for outstanding arrest warrants prior to visiting any inmate.
  • Any individual can be denied a visit with an inmate if the visit would not be in the best interest of justice, case prosecution, operation of the jail, or could cause security concerns.
  • All visitors must be dressed in proper attire. Individuals who violate any of the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department policies will be removed from the facility and may be prohibited from any further visitation privileges.
  • Visitation is a privilege and may be revoked at any time an inmate is not in compliance with any rules of the facility or directives by Buchanan County Sheriff's Department personnel.
  • Any individual discovered delivering contraband into the facility will be prosecuted.
VISITATION BY PROFESSIONALS - NON ATTORNEY
  • Inmate visitation by professional staff members will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except holidays) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Religious services will be scheduled on Sundays.
  • Professionals visits be held in the visitation area in the non-contact visitation rooms.
    • Probation and Parole officers who need to conduct a UA will be allowed to contact clients at the booking desk.
    • Probation and Parole officers who need to conduct other tests or conduct interviews will be required to utilize the contact or non-contact visitation rooms.
  • Visitation will be on a first come basis and departmental members will make every attempt to serve professional members in a prompt and professional manner. If attorneys are using one or both of the visitation rooms there could be a delay.
  • Prior to receiving a visit a professional member will required to produce current identification.  Division of Family Services personnel or Probation or Parole officers will be required to produce official identification and a valid driver's license. Clergy will be required to produce their clergy card and a current driver's license.
  • Once the professional's identification has been verified the officer in Central Control will then make arrangements for the client to be sent to the visitation area.
  • Professionals will be searched in a manner similar to the search procedure at the Buchahan County Court House, which is primarily by metal detection wand and cursory examination of briefcases, bags or purses.
  • Professional members who require a special visit with a client will coordinate all special visits with the Captain of the Corrections Division.
VISITATION BY PROFESSIONALS - ATTORNEY
  • Inmate visitation by attorneys will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except holidays) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The visitation policy does not apply to attorneys when their client has been arrested and is requesting to speak with their attorney.
    • Attorneys who are contacting their client immediately after an arrest will be allowed to contact their client in the no contact bond room at anytime.
  • If an attorney visits after an arrest a client will be made available as soon as practical pursuant to security concerns and activities occurring in the facility.
  • Attorneys will be permitted in the booking area interview rooms only when their client has requested an attorney and an investigator/officer is interviewing/interrogating the client.
  • Professional visits will be held in the visitation area in the non-contact visitation rooms.
  • To make more efficient use of professional visitation time, and the interview rooms available, attorneys may make reservations to speak with their clients during the regularly scheduled professional visitation times. Departmental members will make every attempt to serve professional members in a prompt and professional manner. If other attorneys are using one or both of the visitation rooms there could be a delay.
  • Attorneys that make reservations may make a reservation for a one (1) hour time period. Reservations should be made by calling (816) 236-8828.
    • Attorneys may exceed the one (1) hour time period if there are no other attorneys who have a reservation for a clent interview or if there is no other attorney or professional waiting to utilize the interview room.
  • Attorneys visiting their clients will take the lobby elevator to the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center and contact the officer in Central Control.
  • Prior to receiving a visit a professional member attorney will be required to produce a valid bar association card and a current driver's license.
  • Once the professional's identification has been verified the officer in Central Control will then make arrangements for the client to be sent to the visitation area.
  • Professionals will be searched in a manner similar to the search procedure at the Buchahan County Court House, which is primarily by metal detection wand and cursory examination of briefcases, bags or purses.
  • Professional members who require a special visit with a client will coordinate all special visits with the Captain of the Corrections Division.
CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND RECORDING DEVICES
  • Cellular telephones and recording devices in the non-contact visitation rooms will only be allowed for professionals who are visiting a client.
  • All other individuals will be prohibited from bringing cellular telephones or recording devices into the visitation areas.
  • Cellular telephones and recording devices in an interview room at the booking desk, or other location where an interview/interrogation of a suspect may occur, will be solely at the discretion of the investigator/officer conducting the interview/interrogation.
PROPERTY / MONEY INTAKE
  • Money or property will only be received or released at the dedicated dates/times of Monday 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Money or property will not be accepted or released on any other date or time.
INMATE MAIL
  • Inmates are allowed to receive incoming letters. Any individual who desires to send an inmate incarcerated in the Buchanan County Jail letters may do so by sending the mail to the following address:

  • All incoming mail is subject to search.
  • Packages will not be accepted for inmates, nor will any mail be accepted that does not have a complete and accurate return mailing address from the sender on the envelope.
  • All letters, cards, or correspondence for an inmate must be sent through the United States Postal Service.
  • Full name and return address must be on envelope or mail will not be delivered to the inmate.
PHONE CALLS
  • All inmates have access to a phone.
  • Inmates are only allowed to make outgoing collect calls, with the phone call limited to 20 minutes in duration.
  • Individuals that have a collect call block placed on their telephone by their telephone service provider will not be able to receive telephone calls from Buchanan County Inmates.
ZERO TOLERANCE
  • The Buchanan County Sheriff has a zero tolerance policy on issues of compromised security or illegal activity.
  • Any individual who attempts to provide or deliver any contraband or weapons into the facility will be arrested and a case for criminal charges will be submitted to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
